The English language had been introduced to me throughout my
whole education life. However with such long term exposure with the language,
it was never my favorite nor forte even up until now. The reason why, started
way back in primary school where we had to learn the rules of English language
like grammar, sentence structures, spellings etc. I was never a huge fan of
being tied down by rules as well as rigidity and this took a toll on my
education process for English. I was struggling and barely scrap through a
passing grade to advance further in my education. My interest for the English
language also deteriorates when I had English teachers that either are not
passionate in teaching or have a certain dislike towards my conduct and
attitude in school.
Despite all the drawbacks I experienced, one cannot deny the
importance of English language. To me, being knowledgeable in English have
given me the power to socially interact and understand others. This is
especially so when I do not mix with friends which is of the same race as me. Even
my own group of close friends consists from either the Chinese or Indian
community. Being conversant in English also has a place of prominence
in the working world and basically everyday life. I could safely say that
because when I apply for part time work, I realized that English is one of the
first requirements to attain any job. While I notice around my surroundings, I
realized that English is used as a main universal language. This is because the
core idea of using a standard language enables people to interact and connect
easily with others.
In all honesty, no one is able to avoid from learning and
using English in their life. Personally I feel it is a difficult language to
master (in terms of being grammatically correct etc.). However to be successful
in life, one have to understand that the English language would open many doors
of opportunities especially in this era where Social Networking is prominent.
Thus we shouldn’t underestimate the capabilities of English but continue to learn
and use it.
