The ageing population in Singapore is expected to increase to 900,000 from 300,000 elderly of ages 65 years and above, resulting in a ratio of 1 elderly to every 5 non-elderly by the year 2030. This particular age group of people are more prone to suffer from cardiovascular diseases. In times of emergency, the elderly are unable to receive immediate medical attention, especially the elderly who are living alone as they do not have anyone to monitor them or help them contact the Emergency Medical Services (EMS). In the market today, there is no reliable sensor available to help the elderly communicate with the EMS in times of emergency. As such, our group is interested to close that gap and encourages the Ministry of Health (MOH) to adopt this idea and provide the elderly living alone with a suitable and reliable sensor in the form of a wristband. This particular wristband will help monitor the health status as well as sending a distress signal to the EMS when needed. Our proposal also coincides with Singapore’s goal into becoming a smart nation to help the silver community.
